Training Manager


£28,000 Per Annum



Our client, a leading charity organisation, is currently looking for a Training Manager to join their team on a permanent basis at their Canterbury Offices.


You will be responsible for ensuring high standards of service delivery through the planning and provision of up-to-date education and training for charity staff and volunteers and for external health and social care colleagues. Collectively through the provision of education and training, the Education and Training department also has an important role in increasing the awareness of the services we offer and for generating of income where appropriate. The Training Manager will ensure the skills of the team are directed in an appropriate manner to ensure these aims are met.




  • Ensure high standards of service delivery through responsive and appropriate education and training of the charity workforce (paid and volunteer staff).
  • Actively promote the Hospice as the ‘provider of choice’ for End of Life and palliative care education locally.
  • Manage the activities, resources, and day to day operations of the Training and Conference Centre and its associated staff.
  • Generate income in line with set targets



Principal accountabilities and responsibilities


  • Ensure the department strategy and plans are incorporated in the Workforce and Education corporate plan and aligned to the Organisational Strategy.
  • Work with Executive Management Team and Heads of Department to continually review and revise the department’s key objectives in line with changing directorate plans.
  • To plan, develop and revise, when necessary, existing, and ongoing activities, in house training programmes and external education.
  • To manage and evaluate the education activities provided by the department, working cooperatively in partnership with the Lead Clinical Lecturer and Department Managers to ensure good practice in learning, teaching and assessment.
  • To explore potential for growth for the department and be proactive in researching and obtaining additional funding from outside organisations such as Trust funds making associated proposals to Executive Directors via the Lead Director.
  • To be lead author for the Training and Education Policy and through stakeholder consultation propose final documents to the appropriate authorising group.
  • Manage education budgets and work within targets set for the department and participate in yearly budget planning processes.
  • Working with Heads of Department and HR Business Partners, to understand and collate training and development requests, to ensure these are aligned to the directorate strategy and workforce plan.
  • Identify opportunities for the recruitment of apprentices and maximise levy expenditure.
  • Source appropriate training providers as necessary
  • Work proactively with Managers and Expert Volunteer Co-ordinator to ensure a focused approach to support the progression of the new volunteering strategies in relation to facilitating training.
  • To network with colleagues in other establishments, including colleges and universities, and keep up to date with developments in the sector and within education, learning and training.
  • To establish new and develop existing relationships with academic institutions and accrediting bodies on behalf of the hospice and ensure the hospice participates in education initiatives related to local networks
  • Oversee the development of the education library, ensuring that the library and its learning resources are available and appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development of the annual report and provide data for audit requirements.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications Manager to ensure website contains up to date education department information.
  • Deliver some components of courses / programmes
  • Undertake annual reviews on Pilgrims statutory and mandatory e-learning packages, ensuring these remain fit for purpose, and reflect changes in practice and legislation.



Qualifications and Experience


Educated to Degree level Standard or equivalent
CIPD certificate in training practice or willing to work towards

Previous experience of managing within a training or education department
Knowledge of educational theory and approaches to provide quality learning experiences

Up to date knowledge and recent experience of the latest innovations for delivering on-line training

Skilled in Training Needs Analysis linked with appraisal
Practical experience of operating the Apprentice Levy funds


Full driving licence and access to own transport
